About Cargo Equipment Corporation
Although we’ve been manufacturing heavy-duty tie downs and cargo equipment since 1962, the history of this company and it’s founding family runs all the way back to the turn of the 20th century. With each passing decade, we’ve adapted to changing markets, developing technologies, and new customer needs – all goals that continue to drive us forward today.
Humble Origins: Iden Manufacturing Starts to Sew
John Henry Iden founded the Iden Manufacturing company in Chicago, IL, in 1903. At the time, Iden Manufacturing specialized in producing wagon covers and coal bags, ideal for the open transport methods of the time.
First Evolution: Expansion of Sewn Goods into New Market
William Albert Iden (John’s son) and William’s son Raymond J., took over in the 1920s and began expanding the assortment to include furniture pads, sewn by hand, to serve the moving and delivery market in Chicago at the time. Their offices were on West Washington Steet in Chicago.
They also sold rope, twine and blankets to complement the furniture pads, and expanded into sewing cotton webbing and tie-down straps which could be tied into knots and used to secure products to trucks instead of twine.
Second Evolution: Giving Straps Business Room to Grow
Throughout the 50s, 60s and 70s, the Iden company continued to do a roaring trade with furniture pads and tie-down straps. Hand sewn straps had become such a large part of the business by the 60s that William decided it was time for a change. He established the Cargo Equipment Corporation in 1963, and both businesses ran side-by-side in the same building for the next 20 years.
Third Evolution: Bringing Cargo Equipment into the Next Century
After Ray took over the Iden Company from his father, he continued to watch the growth of Cargo Equipment. In 1991, with the retirement of the company’s president, he saw an opportunity to bring his son on board in an executive capacity. Fresh out of college, Jeff brought new ideas and new technology to Cargo Equipment, and his brother joined the team in 1993 to assist with this new infusion of technological growth.
In 2005, Cargo was the proud owner of its first website. Purely informational, it gave customers the ability to learn and this company, its capabilities, and its product offering.
Fourth Evolution: Merging the Two Companies Back Together
As Cargo sales grew, there was a growing need for an online shopping experience. In 2008, the website officially started to accept orders.
Meanwhile, the Iden company saw a gradual decline in the market for furniture pads. It was time for another strategic move. The two companies officially merged in 2012.
Always Looking Forwards
Today, as part of the MOTIS Brands family, Cargo continues to strive for the best products in their arena, and the best online shopping experience. When they first established an internet presence, they were one of a kind. Competition has been trying to catch up ever since.
Cargo Equipment Corp truly is…. “Better Under Pressure”.
