If you’re strong, using an overhand or baseball throw to toss straps over your load might seem like a good idea, however it runs the risk of straining your shoulder and/or rotator cuff.
Flatbed cargo can be a pain to tie down properly, however there are many tips and tricks that truckers have figured out over the years to make the process of passing winch straps over the top a little easier. One of those techniques is colloquially known as "slingshotting" because of the use of ballasted weight properlled forward with relatively little effort.
Not only does it require less effort than a standard overhand throw, a slingshot underhand throw is gentler on your shoulder joint as well, which makes it a favorite for any trucker prone to shoulder stiffness or pain.
How to Slingshot a Winch Strap
- Roll the webbing backwards as tight as you can (underside). This reduces the chances of the webbing getting tangled or twisted during the throw.
- Leave excess as you make the final loop, creating a ballasted weight with enough slack that you can sling it.
- Heave it up and over your load. The backwards curled webbing will uncurl naturally when it makes contact with the load.
